Prevention and Harm Reduction with Support AIDES Association

How to prevent HIV and hepatitis can only be made from a diversified approach, AIDES Association develops its prevention activities through various media and in different fields. Report transmission modes, distributing the means to reduce the risks (condoms, sterile syringes ...) and allow people to hold discussions without being judged: these principles are the basis of our procedures on prevention, and each procedure is tailored the specificities of each audience.

Besides listening, councils and the material offered by the host structures of the Association, the AIDES guarantees their presence in the field, with the people most exposed to HIV transmission. Our members go out to the young people in festive means moving to areas frequented by homosexual, frequented by migrant trades, streets frequented by drug users and prison establishments.

Harm Reduction (RDR)

When seeking to inform or to care, more people exposed to HIV and hepatitis (homosexuals, migrants, drug users ...) are faced sometimes with prejudices and moral discourses. As it is difficult to talk about their practices in these conditions and how everyone should have access to prevention, AIDES chosen to apply the Harm Reduction (RDR), non-discriminatory approach based on trust and confidentiality.

Our members have all the possibilities that can reduce risk and protect health. Be able to realize the risks that each sexual practice involves, knowing harmfulness of different psychoactive products disinfect a syringe used to know ... With the RDR, the person is better prepared to make decisions about their practices and becomes responsible for your decisions. It is no longer necessary to prove the great success of RDR, the rate of HIV infections among drug users intravenously fell dramatically in the regions where it was applied.

Rapid HIV test offered to the community

Positive samples in life science experiment

The tested for HIV can be done in specialized centers, in doctors' offices or laboratories, but in France, it is estimated that approximately 30 000 people are infected with this virus without being aware of it. Because not all people have access to the classic circuit prevention, AIDES decided to develop a new way of detection: the HIV Rapid Test, also called "Test without medical intervention" and "Rapid Test Guideline for Diagnosis" (TROD) .

After years of research and experimental practice, our members are officially authorized to practice this Rapid Test HIV (Decree of November 10 2010)! In the local association in our buses equipped in trades of migrants in frequented by homosexuals or where the action is justified spaces, our members can apply this test from now. Blood collection is made at the tip of your finger is painless and allows to obtain in a few minutes, a first result of HIV status. In case of positive result, the person is taken to a medical structure, there she will do a confirmation test and will be monitored throughout the process. There is even a website ( To know where the militants do AIDES Rapid Test HIV.

Identity and local trades against

Have access to the identity stores and venues: what is more effective to establish a first contact with those who are not accustomed to the local association? In stores and salons of migrants in the clubs and bars frequented by homosexual public, at festivals and beaches, our members provide information, prevention materials and openness to dialogue.

Profile - Two years ago, Geoffray invested in stocks "migrants" from AIDES, in Marseille. Once a week, he goes to eight or ten African and Caribbean shops Barrio Nouailles, city neighborhood that has the highest concentration of social spaces frequented by migrants. Sometimes accompanied by another militant, he meets with owners of businesses and customers to propose a dialogue about HIV, hepatitis and other sexually transmitted diseases, and distribute documents and prevention material.

"I go to the salons and hair salons, bakeries, restaurants and small businesses frequented by the migrants. I introduce myself to the owner of the establishment and the clients, introduce AIDES and explain the role of the association. The first idea is to propose a dialogue about HIV, distribute documents, male and female condoms, lubricating gel ... Photonovels that tell the story of people affected by HIV, report on modes of transmission and show scenes of discrimination are very successful.

The topics covered vary depending on the current and local priorities. We remind people about the importance of testing the communication between the couple, we invite you to sign petitions of AIDES and to mobilize as a political threat as their living conditions and their health. Generally, the debate takes shape quickly and people take the opportunity to ask questions. We do a survey of the expectations and needs of people, we address problems of the seropositive and try to evolve representations. This exchange of information is a crucial moment. It allows people to be able to make favorable choices for sexual health. "

A third of people who go to prison are users of psychoactive products. With a number of seropositive three to four times higher, and a number of patients with hepatitis C virus four to five times higher than outdoors, the prison system focuses extremely high risk of contamination. Addition of prevention among inmates and sensitization actions of prison officials, the AIDES fighting for years for the implementation of needle exchange programs within prisons.

Profile - Carmen invested in the shares 'prison' from AIDES, at a Reception Centre for Monitoring and Harm Reduction among Drug Users (CAARUD), on the Mediterranean coast of France. Every Wednesday, she goes to the house of detention of Nîmes to talk to inmates about the modes of transmission of HIV, hepatitis and other sexually transmitted diseases, and the different methods that make it possible to reduce these risks.

"Wednesday morning, I find myself in'bairro newcomers' with detainees who have just arrived. I introduce myself, I present the AIDES Association and communicate our schedules residence. Then we start a dialogue and detainees are invited to ask questions. Everything that relates to health can be addressed.

In the afternoon, remain in the Unit and Ambulatory Care Consultations of this house of detention. Get people living with HIV and hepatitis viruses, but also drug users in substitution therapy. We chose the farthest office in traffic areas, the end of a corridor so that inmates may find ourselves in absolute confidentiality.

These exchanges can be long during the meeting of the "Hepatitis" group, which occurs once per month, allowing those involved to share their experiences. There is still much work to be done with regard to the harm reduction related to drug use. Working with other militants AIDES and doctors from various units Consultations and Outpatient Care for the distribution of sterile injecting equipment is permitted in prisons. While waiting, I plan to raise awareness of correctional officers about the specifics of HIV and hepatitis sessions. "

Note from the Seropositive Web Site Editor. Although Damage Reduction is a necessity in prisons and drug consumption environments, legions of politicians linked to religions and retrograde and reactionary churches, impose dozens of general obstacles to the realization of this in France, as well as in Brazil
