Lamivudine, a Gift from Who Gave Us AZT (I Survived It)
A is an antiretroviral with a list of undesirable effects, but that is often a good option!
Abacavir is an anti-HIV drug that reduces the amount of virus in the body. Anti-HIV drugs, such as abacavir, slow down the replication of HIV and prevent damage to the immune system, reducing the risk of developing AIDS-related diseases and Opportunistic Diseases.
Abacavir belongs to a class of drugs known as nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs).
When HIV infects a cell, the reverse transcriptase enzyme copies the viral genome of single stranded RNA into double stranded viral DNA.
This viral DNA is then integrated into the chromosomal DNA of the CD4 Cell and can continue to reproduce in the body. Four natural nucleosides complete the synthesis of DNA: adenosine, cytidine, guanosine and thymidine. An NRTI drug replaces a defective version of one of the nucleosides, causing premature termination of the proviral DNA strand.
In July of 1999, abacavir was approved by the European Union licensing body for use in combination with other anti-HIV drugs.
The drug was licensed in the United States in December of 1998.
